How are floating point operations different from fixed point operations?

The floating-point operations of multiplication and division are not much different from their fixed-point counterparts. For multiplication, exponents of the two operands are added and their significands are multiplied: (± 2 e 1 × s 1) × (± 2 e 2 s 2) = ± 2 e 1 + e 2 (s 1 × s 2)
