How are floating point numbers stored in MIPS?

MIPS supports both single- and double-precision IEEE floating-point arithmetic. Double-precision (64-bit) numbers are stored in pairs of 32-bit registers, so only the 16 even-numbered registers ( $f0, $f2, $f4 , … , $f30) are used to specify double-precision operations.
